I saw an article online on USA Today about the newest trend in housing for singles, the micro-apartment. They're running between 250 and 400 square feet and sometimes don't even have private kitchens. The layout and multi-functional furniture are pretty neat and many of the units are kind of stylish and cute. They remind me a little of the Tumbleweed Tiny Cottages. However, what appalled me about them was their price. One of them goes for $2500 a month! I realize they're often located in nice parts of downtown areas, but OMG, how does anyone afford that? I'm sure their utility bills are small, but even so, that's twice my mortgage payment. I would have thought micro-apartments would be designed to save young singles some money. I like the idea of these private little spaces for people who want to live downtown, but I'm just not sure how to feel about making someone pay so much for a place like that. At least when you're done building a Tumbleweed cottage, you own it, and you can take it with you wherever you go. Here's a link to the article: www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/07/30/tiny-apartments-apodments-catch-on-us-cities/2580179

I don't think I could live in one. I have way too much sentimental stuff I could not part with. Even my daughter has more stuff than would fit, lol. Neat idea, way over priced in my opinion. Very innovative.

Very innovative, but as you and Marie said, way too expensive. We have a lot of guest houses in the towns around me. Some are really cute and most are either bachelor type with the bedroom and livingroom combined, or tiny one bedrooms. They range from 400-1000.00 month. For a single person, I think they are ideal. I have only a 1000 square feet in my house, and do fine with that. The only thing I really would like is another bathroom. Having just one bathroom can be an issue at times ;D

I could live with one bathroom as long as it was a really nice one, but I live alone so really never need more than one at a time. I'd gladly substitute one of my bathrooms for a real laundry room or more storage. But I do agree that a smaller footprint is often just as good as a bigger one, depending on how the space is configured.

My daughter moved out, so only hubs and I, but we always seem to need the facilities at the same time

Last summer I toured the tenement museum in the Lower East Side of New York City, and they've restored a few of the tenement apartments with period fixtures so you can see how people lived then. The apartment I got to tour was probably about the size of one of the micro-apartments, and there wasn't a bathroom in it at all. There was one water closet out in the hallway that everyone on that floor shared. There was a large family that lived in the apartment I toured. The oldest daughter had to sleep on the kitchen floor, and one of the boys had to sleep sitting up in a chair. Privacy would be nearly non-existent. It's pretty amazing what you can adapt to, I guess. They said the tenants didn't like to go out to the water closet at night because of all the rats. Kinda puts the micro-apartments into perspective for me.

Oh my!!! I think my one bathroom will do just fine ;D I actually lived for almost 2 years in a converted hotel in England. They converted it from a hotel to Military housing. Was supposed to be temporary only, but was there for about 20 months. We had a small sitting room, 2 bedrooms, and a shared hall bathroom (shared with anywhere from 1-5 other families). I thought it was fun and exciting at the time. Of course I was only 7 years old, and being a kid, very adaptable

I'd love to go live in England for 20 months someday. Not sure I'd want to share a bathroom, though. I did that at a small hotel I stayed in up in Scarborough. There weren't many other guests, so I mostly had the bathroom to myself, but I'm so used to a bathroom of my own now that anything else seems almost uncivilized.

I wouldn't mind having this out back, so when my family drives me nuts I would have a place to go. lol Really quite innovative.
