I don't know if many of you make your own cleaning supplies, but I like to whenever I can find something that works well. I've recently been using this recipe"
6 tablespoons of vinegar 2 tablespoons of Dawn liquid dishwashing detergent (the original)
Heat vinegar until it is very hot, then add Dawn and put in a spray bottle. It really gets things clean!
I use this on my cabinets. Just spray and wipe with wet cloth.

Rosemary, since this would make a fairly small quantity, I am assuming it is best used "hot?" Or, do you heat it to better mix it and then store it until you need it? Dumb questions, I guess ...
Also, which Dawn is the original?? I think these days there are about 18 different flavors!
My grandmother used to use white vinegar to clean with. She would say that cider vinegar was to eat, and white vinegar was to clean with.

allen, the 'recipe' said to use it hot. I guess it might cut grease and dirt better that way. I figure you could stick the spray bottle in a bowl of hot water to warm it if you wanted to make more. I just make the small amount and use it up.
The Dawn comes in the little $1 bottles and says original on it--it is blue. Your grandma had something going there--vinegar is great for so many things. I use it plain as a fabric softener in my laundry.

Thanks for sharing Rosemary! I think the "blue" Dawn is used in a lot of cleaning recipes- it really is something good to keep handy.

I love Dawn. They use it to clean tar/oil off of animals when there has been a spill. I used it to clean up one of my chiwi's when they rolled in oil Worked like a miracle ;D It was my little chi/poodle mix, Sugar. She is an absolute pistol. We have to watch here very minute of each day as she will roll in absolutely anything. She also rolls around on every carpet or anything we have on the floor. She is the alpha female and does this to mark everything with her scent. She is overly bonded to me and the first thing she does when I get home from work, is lick my legs and feet and than growls at all the other dogs when they come near me. I guess she is marking me also I like to use vinegar and water to clean glass. It does not streak and really makes glass/windows sparkle.

I use half/half white vinegar and water in a spray bottle for cleaning and disinfecting. You can also put a splash of lemon in...but the vinegar "scent" really does dissipate quickly. Also...this is the BEST tip I've found, lately: This old house I live in had a toilet stoppage last Saturday morning I tried all the typical solutions - plunged, and used a straightened wire hanger to fish around in there, but they didn't help. (At this point I had visions of my plumber...) I looked online and found the remedy that saved me: I poured some dish-washing liquid in the toilet, and followed that with hot water (not boiling). I let that sit for 20 minutes, and then added some more hot water. Flushed and...voila! No more stoppage. It really did seem like a miracle! The Ajax dish-washing liquid that I used happened to be the degreasing version, which probably helped. My friend says she puts a couple squirts of Dawn (and its degreasing properties) down her kitchen sink drain every month, followed by hot water, and that works as a preventative measure.

Thanks for the tip, CT. Anything to avoid a plumber is GOOD! Of course, my plumber is my husband--my all-around handy-man, but still. . .it's not a job he likes to tackle.

my plumber is my husband--my all-around handy-man,
Ah, yes...that's a wonderful thing! For all the years, we used to depend on my Dad - he could fix anything! It was a rude awakening for me when I had to either do it myself or call someone...
