Are any of you making new--never tried before--recipes for Thanksgiving? I am mostly making the traditional, but myself, my daughters and my niece made a fruit cake that is my great-grandmother's recipe. It is a little different than most fruit cakes, as it is a layer cake. It has to be kept moist until you eat it. My gr-grandmother always made two of them in October and had one for Thanksgiving and one for Christmas. She kept them in her pie safe. I don't have one, but do have an old metal bread box that I am using. But, we found something similar online that says you can refrigerate it, so we're talking about that option. Else, we may be spending a fortune on rum to keep it moist, LOL!
We figured out, after making up the layers that the recipe was for BOTH cakes and not just one of them. We ended up with a four layer cake and a pan of muffins. Now, the challenge is to make sure it is good until Thanksgiving. My main worry is mold. So, we will see.
Anyone else doing adventurous cooking?

I'm so glad to hear that someone besides me likes fruit cake! Rose-mary - how wonderful that you have your great-grandma's recipe. I hope it turns out just right and you enjoy every bite!

I haven't been asked to bring anything to my sister's house for dinner yet, and I'm hoping not to. I plan to spend the long weekend pulling up carpet in the upstairs bedrooms and installing the laminate flooring I bought last month. I did something awful to my back and spent four days suffering with the most excruciatingly painful muscle spasms I've ever had. By the end of that four days I truly understood what it was going to be like to get old and be unable to function. It has made me decide that when I build my forever house (which I hope to do next summer) I will be sure to include universal design elements. But first I have to get the laminate in upstairs here and start getting the house ready to put on the market. I hope I will be able to find a nice little spot of land somewhere and get a construction loan. Even if I have to live in a trailer for a year while I wait for the house to be built, I'm willing to do that if I can end up with a small house I can grow old in comfortably.
I'm not doing much decorating for holidays this year. I did a little bit for Halloween and Thanksgiving, but not much. I just ordered a black Christmas tree (pre-lit) and will figure out some interesting way to decorate it. It's probably going to be savaged by my kitties, so nothing breakable. I would like to spend my holiday vacations fixing up the house, and since I'm doing it all by myself, it takes longer than it really should, so I'm going easy on the decorating this year.
