We have a 1968 brick ranch. We have a nice big family room with fireplace that we use 90% of the time. We also have a front living room that gets used very little except to walk thru.
There is a couch in there that has ugly flowers on it (what was I thinking) and it currently has a slip cover on it. It is about 13 years old, a sleeper sofa. We rarely use it. It is not very comfortable to sit on. I want to get rid of it, but then I won't have much in sitting furniture in that room, other than a rocking chair.
Do I really need a couch in the living room? Some day I would like to buy a love seat to match the rest of our furniture in the family room, but not in the budget yet. I am kind of wanting to clean out my house, and not add more stuff right now. Just wondering how weird it will look with not much furniture in there.

Hi Marie - There's no law that says you must have a sofa in your living room. Trust me on this - you won't get arrested! It's your house which means you can do anything you want and it's strictly your business. If you do dump the sofa and someone comes in you could just say "we're in the process of redecorating" and leave it at that.

I'm with Linn--it's your house and you can make the 'decorating rules'. If you don't like it in there, I say get rid of it! You'll get it the way you like, eventually.

Is there any way to make a sofa more comfy? The cushions are broken down which makes it uncomfortable to sit on. It is either a Lane or Lazy Boy, for what I paid, and how little it was used, it did not last very long before the cushions were broken down. An eggcrate mattress topper? Foam padding?

If you find a solution for your couch, Marie, I'd like to know what it is! We've had our furniture nearly 3 years and after the first year, it was like it all just broke down. We've looked and looked at furniture, but none seems to be made better than the others--at least not in our budget.

About 3 years ago we bought an England Brand sofa and chair and a half with ottoman. It has a 10 yr warranty on the cushions breaking down. So far so good. But only time will tell.
