I'll pass along a pic of my back yard. This is what I have been up to for the past five years. When we moved here in '08, there was nothing there but an old clothesline, weedy grass, and an over grown woods line. We added the garden wall to cover a nasty chain link fence, cleaned up the wood line back to the trees, added the picket fence to keep the deer out of our new raised bed veggie garden (though this year the deer figured it out ), and then there is the shed that I have been working on for the past year. We even "re-purposed" the cedar posts from the old clothesline into posts for a couple of bluebird houses. A lot of work, but we've enjoyed the process! Allen Attachments:

Beautiful! Definitely showcases the fruits of your labors. It looks like an awful lot of work. What's next on your list after you complete the shed?

Do you find that bluebirds actually nest in the houses you built them? We've had to take down our birdfeeders because of an influx of rats, but we really miss seeing the birds. I'm thinking I might buy and hang some birdhouses but I don't know whether the birds will actually use them.
How are you dealing with the deer now that they've figured out your fence? They're the one thing I don't have to worry about around here...too much city for the deer. It's the humans that are decimating my raised-bed gardens at school. They keep taking anything that gets ripe instead of leaving it for us to harvest for the food bank, and they stole the cute little turtle statue one of the teachers donated to decorate the garden. I'd almost rather have a deer. I've got a friend who lives and gardens out in the country, and deer are a constant nuisance for her as well. They're pretty determined.

You have a beautiful place. The first time I had ever seen bamboo was at your place.

Thanks, Marie. We sure enjoyed meeting you and your family. I hope your Mom is back to her old self. She is one neat lady! Shabby, I think putting up bird houses is a great idea. Birds are fun to watch, from nest building, to feeding the little ones, to seeing the fledglings take off into the big ol' world. We have a growing population of bluebirds around here, so we chose to provide nesting areas which would appeal to them -- and it worked! Just look around and see what kind of birds in your area you want to attract, and then do houses specific to them. Ask around, or do a little internet research for what and how. Some birds are pretty particular about where they nest, and there is also the issue of competition between the "good" birds for nesting places and the not so desirable birds. So, you have to be a bit intentional about what you do. As for the deer, we do feed them and provide a salt lick, so I guess it was inevitable that they figure out fresh green beans and tomatoes are better than dried up shelled corn any ol' day. Between now and spring, we are going to have to get a plan. What does your friend do to keep the deer out of her garden?? Allen Attachments:

Allen, My mom still talks about our trip to Pigeon Forge and meeting you and your wife. I am so glad we took her last summer, as of right now, I don't think she could handle the trip. While she is alive, and doing better than 2 months ago, she has a long long way to go. She is our miracle woman. Thanks again for such a nice time.

Allen I love, love, love your garden. What a wonderful oasis from day to day life. I would imagine it must be like stepping into a secret garden when you open that gate
